When trying to find a blog to examine for quality and best practices, I came across a blog called The Curriculum Corner by Rich Tailbi at https://wordpress.com/read/blog/id/63932945/. The blog was easy to understand and the ideas were easily expressed. i used 12 Steps to Launch a successful Blog by Ilias Chelidonis (2011), to analyze the blog.
The first step in publishing a blog is to decide what you are going to blog about (Chelidonis, 2011). Tailbi clearly identifies the purpose of his blogs. He is an administrator and states that he is writing the blogs for his staff or anyone else interested. He has a clear purpose, curriculum. Many of the other steps are apparent int he blog as well such as a professional name, media sharing links and social media usage with links to Facebook, Twitter, Pintrest, Google +, LinkedIn, and Prezi.
Tailbi’s blog, https://wordpress.com/read/blog/id/63932945/, The Standards for Mathematical Practice, part 1 follows many of the DM Best Practices: Writing for the Web retrieved from http://www.uakron.edu/webteam/docs/dm_webwriting.pdf. The content in the blog is easy to read. The author states his purpose in the first few sentences as well as where he obtained information. Main points are in bold and underlined so it is easy to scan and identify the points. He follows each point with a bullet giving examples of the points.
Overall, I would say The Curriculum Corner is a tool I could use and may start following the blogs. This inspires me to start writing my own blog with a similar focus. The blogs I have thus far written, fall short of the best practices. My audience is narrow and intended for my instructor. I do not state the most important first and bullet or highlight details later on in the post. If I were to seriously write a blog where I wanted to have followers, I would need to follow and study a few blogs that interest me. I would try to figure out the tools they use, try to spot common techniques, and look for other nuances that could be used in my own blog.
